2020.11.11 17:10 cilantro_samosa [OC] What would rosters look like if you took the top 950+ players in WS/48 and put them on teams they grew up near?

If this seems familiar, I actually did a version with 700 players and minimum 15000 minutes played. I dropped the minutes requirement to 10000 to include players who spent most/all of their career in the ABA and players who burned bright but had injury troubles (Brandon Roy and Doug Collins).
If you're not a fan of reading a lot of text, here's the imgur link to rosters, although you should know I added 25 new teams! There is a TL;DR at the bottom!

Inspiration

Ever since LeBron went back to Cleveland, it's always fascinated me on what rosters would look like if everyone went home. I did this during the shutdown for the current rosters (all 514 players that played a game in 2019-2020 before the shutdown plus Jusuf Nurkic, who would have returned had the season continued normally)!

Player Pool and Team Pool

I used the top 957 players who have at least 10000 minutes played in their career.
Why 10000 minutes played? Because that's the lower standard set by Basketball-Reference to get on their ABA career leaderboard (15000 MP for NBA). I added George Mikan, because even though he hasn't played enough minutes, he's featured in All-Time ESPN NBARank and Bill Simmons Hall of Fame Pyramid.

I started off with the current 30 teams. To split up the Lakers and Clippers, I gave the Clippers their proposed Inglewood site.
As I looked at the map of player hometowns, I realized that there were:
  1. some areas that had a lot of players, but few close NBA teams.
  2. conversely, some areas that had bloated rosters with too many players
Based off city population and arena size, I added 25 new teams. I relaxed my arena restrictions (minimum capacity before was 10000).
New Teams:

Anaheim Amigos Honda Center (18336) Kawhi Leonard, Reggie Miller, Bill Walton

The Process

I created rotations to the best of my ability, but I am not proclaiming these as the be-all, end-all
Next phase was to add international players
And with that, here are the all-time hometown rosters including internationals in italics! (If you're more of a visual person, here's the imgur link where I also included regular season stats and career accolades)

2020.10.15 10:30 AModernDayOrion Three games in one weekend. Recap #3: The Evil Dead

Hello again filmreroll!
We have finally made it to The Evil Dead recap!
You can find recap one for A Nightmare on Elm Street here: https://www.reddit.com/filmreroll/comments/ja13yd/three_games_in_one_weekend_recap_1_a_nightmare_on/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=web2x&context=3
And recap two for Pumpkinhead can be found here: https://www.reddit.com/filmreroll/comments/jaux1g/three_games_in_one_weekend_recap_2_pumpkinhead/

As stated previously if you are seeing this recap first, I ran three film reroll style games for my group this past weekend. One on Friday, one on Saturday, and the final one on Sunday. 20 hours or so of awesome reroll action. It was awesome!
I decided that I wanted to share the recaps of our epic games here with other fans of the podcast and that hopefully, you all will enjoy reading about them as much as we enjoyed playing them.
So, here we go with the final recap...
Real quick first though.
Just in case any die-hard The Evil Dead fans are reading this, I should let you all know something. Due to the legal issues the movies had with rights causing multiple versions of the cabin trip, I decided to kind of mix all of the options together to make one solid story. So, for the most part, we stick to the original The Evil Dead film. However, I also introduce some Evil Dead 2 characters into the story later on just in case the PCs stayed in the cabin long enough to encounter them. I also added in a few small (like minute) details from The Evil Dead: The Musical's story. The main one from that was that Shelly was not Scotty’s girlfriend, but was instead picked up drunk (or was she) in a bar by Scotty three days before the trip. I also, added in a few new details to the characters to give my players a few fun things to play around with.
Also, as my group plans to do a part two to this reroll and with this being a heavy PvP format, I will be placing some spoiler blocks on a few pieces of info throughout. I know my players are on here and read through my recaps, so if you are a player then don't look at the spoilers. If you are not one of my players, feel free to look at everything. Please be aware of these spoilers on any comments you leave as well. Thank you.
And now, with all of that out of the way, may I present...
The Evil Dead – Total game time – 6 hours
October 1979.
A group of five Michigan State students travel down a rural Tennessee road. In the driver seat of the 1973 Oldsmobile Delta 88 is Scotty, the brash twenty-three-year-old S-mart stock boy. Next to him in the passenger seat is Shelly, a party girl type that only just met the party at the beginning of the trip. In the back are Linda, the ballet dancer in the center, Cheryl, the quiet and reserved artist, and Ashly (aka Ash), the squared jaw boyfriend of Linda and older brother of Cheryl.
Scotty looks to Ash in the back and asks him to figure out where they are. Ash checks the map and informs Scotty that the turn off for the cabin is just up ahead in a few miles. Suddenly, a large pickup truck turns the corner in front of the Delta, and Scotty, much like the movie, fails his driving roll and the wheel locks up. But thankfully the pickup driver made his roll successfully and avoided the teens. The movie could have quickly changed drastically right there.
The group, only slightly shaken, make their way to their turnoff and pull up to the small wooden bridge that they are required to cross. Scotty begins to slowly cross the rickety bridge when the back tire falls through one of the boards to the waters below. Because the sudden drop happened on Cheryl’s side of the car, her player makes a fright check and fails by five. What follows, nearly derailed the entire movie.
After the drop, Cheryl begins to panic and throws her door open to leave the vehicle. Seeing that she has no clearance to leave she begins to come to her senses. However, Linda, fearing for her friend’s safety attempts to grab the frightened girl and crit fails her grab. Linda shoves Cheryl from the car and she falls into the frigid waters below.
In a panic, both Ash and Linda dive in after her. Their diving forms were not great and all three PCs took some damage from their plunge. Ash manages to get the ladies to the shore and the three walk up to meet calm as a cucumber Scotty and a fainted Shelly.
Scotty attempts in vain to convince the group to just go to the cabin and relax. The group, most having been injured, decide that they need to go to the hospital in the nearby Morristown, to get checked out. After six-plus hours on the road and at the hospital, the group returns to the still normal cabin shortly before nightfall.
The group unpack the Delta and get settled into their new setting. Ash nearly crit fails his cooking roll and begins to make something that would likely not pass for edible. The group eat and are merry for a bit, before deciding to each go to their separate rooms.
Scotty and Shelly each fail at Erotic Arts and the results are flaccid at best. Ash and Linda have a decently romantic scene where Ash gives Linda the magnifying glass necklace. Cheryl is able to hear all of the tomfoolery in the adjacent rooms and decides to listen to some of the records that are in the main room to try and drown out the noise.
Cheryl puts on a Beatles album and smiles, forgetting about the traumatic experience from early for the first time since it happened. She is quickly snapped out of her bliss as she hears something out in the woods from the open window.
Join Us…
She walks over to the window to shut it and hears distant thunder. She takes a moment to look out into the trees and shrugging reaches up to grab the shutters. Her right hand begins to tense up and the color fades from it. She begins to scream as her hand starts to move on its own, but the sheer shock of the event causes her to faint in heap.
When she comes to a short time later, she is not where she was before. She is on the floor on the opposite side of the room. In front of her is a pencil and a notepad. Her hand is hers once again and she picks up the pad. Scribbled in an aggressive and chaotic way is an odd rectangular shape, with what appears to be a crude face drawn on the center of the image.
Cheryl begins to call for Ash, who runs to his sisters’ side quickly followed by everyone else. Cheryl shows Ash the drawing and begins to understandably freak out. Before she can finish her story, however, the cellar door flings open on its own startling everyone.
Not having noticed it before, Scotty excitedly grabs a flashlight and heads down to investigate. Ash and Linda decide to follow suit, grabbing the flimsy lantern from above the fireplace. Cheryl and Shelly exchange worried looks as Ash and his girlfriend head into the dark cellar.
When the pair reach the bottom of the stairs, they find a dirt-floored space, with a few separating walls, and leaky piping. They quickly scan the area and call out for Scotty. Getting no response and not seeing his flashlight, the two lovers decide to go back up to wait with the others.
After about five minutes they hear banging on the steps as Scotty makes his way back to the group. “Oh, man there’s so much cool crap down there!”
Scotty his carrying a large reel to reel tape recorder, an odd-looking dagger with some kind of ornate ivory hilt, a strange yellow object with a wet like gleam to it, and a double-barreled shotgun.
The excited Scotty lays all the items down in the center of the floor and presses play on the tape recorder. The haunting words of Professor Raymond Knowby begin to play…
“This is Professor Raymond Knowby, department of ancient history. Log Entry number two.
I believe I have made a significant find in the Castle of Kandar.Having journeyed there with my wife, Henrietta, my daughter, Annie, and associate professor Ed Genty. It was in the rear chamber of the castle where we stumbled upon something remarkable.
It is entitled "Naturum De Montum", roughly translated: Book of the Dead.
A volume of ancient Sumerian burial practices and funerary incantations. The book is bound in human flesh and inked in human blood.”
The group now thoroughly spooked attempt to turn the recorder off, but Scotty attempts to stop them. “Oh, come on, I want to hear the rest of it.”
Both Linda and Cheryl reach for the off switch, but Linda rolls a crit fail and bangs heads with Cheryl, knocking them both back. Scott laughs and continues to play the tape.
“My wife and I retreated to this remote cabin so that I may translate the book in peace. Here I continued my research undisturbed by the myriad distractions of modern civilization and far from the groves of academe.
It was here that I began the translations. The book deals with demons and demon resurrection and those forces which roam the forest and dark bowers of Man's domain. The first few pages warn that these enduring creatures may lie dormant but are never truly dead. They may be recalled to active life through the incantations presented in this book. It is through the recitation of these passages that the dark spirits are given license to possess the living.
Included here are the phonetic pronunciations of those passages:
Kanda, Estrata, Montos, Trana, Verata, Mesartra, Mestrobenia, Kanda.”
A large tree suddenly crashes through the window as lightning flashes and the thunder roars outside the cabin. The tape player is quickly shut off as Scotty begins to try and clean up the glass.
With her third crit fail roll of the night, Linda hears a voice coming from out the back of the house. It sounds like that of a small child calling for its mother. Linda grabs the flashlight and in all the confusion begins to walk out the back. Shelly does notice her and shakily decides to go with her.
As Linda and Shelly walk through the dark woods behind the cabin looking for the small child that Linda swears, she heard, the women are attacked by trees. With a failed escape roll and a terrified Shelly running back to the cabin, the woods begin their disturbing attack. The camera fades to black as the muffled screams of Linda are heard.
(Now, I’m a bad GM here. As such a large fan of the original film, I have come to understand and expect the tree rape scene. While it is rightfully disturbing, it is also an (in my opinion) important part of the story. It shows up just how evil the force/deadites are and that we should be ready for absolutely anything as all bets are clearly off.
My error as a GM, however, was that I forgot that my actor playing Linda hadn’t seen the movie and therefore had no idea that the scene was something that could happen. The player being a young woman was rightfully bothered by my inclusion of the scene, but more than anything she was bothered by my lack of a warning.
I should have thought better of even including it, just as Sam Raimi has done with the original film. To my player, I again apologize.)
Shelly bursts through the back door of the cabin screaming for help. Ash, now noticing Linda is not inside, grabs the lantern and the shotgun (not yet his boomstick) and runs outside, followed closely by Cheryl who is brandishing the strange dagger. Shelly doesn’t want to go back and stays by the door as Scotty continues his douchey dismissiveness of everything.
Ash and Cheryl find a terrified and bloody Linda on the forest floor. Helping her to her feet they begin to walk back to the cabin. Linda seems more or less okay as she mentions that she just tripped, and Shelly just overreacted.
Linda grabs Ash to embrace him and begins to kiss his neck in a slightly out of character public display of affection. Before he can react though, he feels a sharp pain on his neck as Linda bites a chunk of flesh.
Ash manages to keep his composure as Cheryl stabs at Linda with the knife. Cutting her arm, Linda howls in pain as the wound begins to boil. Now thoroughly pissed, Linda drops the act and goes full deadite. Ash and Cheryl are in stunned shock at the transformation and Linda, using it to her advantage, attacks Cheryl. With Linda now shaking hands with Cheryl’s intestines, Cheryl succumbs to the dark side and (as the Linda player put it) the hot demon girl club.
The two most important women in Ash’s life are both standing in front of him as he just stands there frozen in terror. Linda ties up Ash with vines and places him on his knees in front of her.
The two women toy with Ash and tease him with the horrible things they have planned. With a quick slap landing hard by Linda, Ash snaps out of his daze and begins to try to fight back. He dodges a few hits as Cheryl decides they need more help.
Meanwhile, Scotty tries one more time to seduce Shelly, but failing to do so leaves her to stare out the back door for the rest of the group. Slowly walking out of the darkness comes a normal-looking Cheryl. Shelly asks what happened and Cheryl says that everything is just fine. Shelly responds with “I thought something was seriously wrong.” To which Cheryl coyly replies, “Well, that’s what a dumb bitch like you would think.”
Cheryl lunges forwards and slashes Shelly across the stomach. Blood begins to bellow from her torso as her face contorts.
Ash still a bit out of it and utterly confused sees Cheryl and Shelly walk up to him. Cheryl poised and looking normal, but Shelly, still not fully grasping her new beguile abilities, stays in hideous face. Realizing that the jig is up, the other two women resort back to their new demonic visages.
Ash tries one last time to reason with the girls, but they just decide to torture him some more. Linda, realizing that Scotty is still oblivious inside, tells Ash how she and the others are going to seduce him and make Ash watch before they turn them both. Cheryl chooses to go rogue instead and attacks Ash, scratching him hard across the chest.
Ashly Williams has fallen to the powers of the Necronomicon.
Linda, now excited to have her paramour back on her side, releases Ash from his binds and the three women march to the house to destroy the jerk, Scotty.
Deadite Ash makes a crucial perception check as Deadite Linda walks by though. The light from the back porch catches the magnifying glass necklace still around Linda’s neck and this small moment is enough to give Ash a chance to break out of the control of evil. He succeeds.
The three deadite women are led by Linda (now dubbed the head bitch/deadite in charge) into the cabin. All completely unaware of the cured Ash not far behind them. Scotty is sitting in the middle of the floor and is listening to the rest of the tape.
“I know now that my wife has become host to a Kandarian demon. I fear that the only way to stop those possessed by the spirits of the book is through the act of... bodily dismemberment.”
Scotty jumps as the women startle him. Shelly, still unable to keep her new form in check, deadites out and terrifies Scotty. Linda and Cheryl grab his arms as Shelly straddles the mean jerk and rips his chest apart. Ash is now alone.
(GM Note: So, the way I decided to handle the whole Promised One/El Jefe thing, was to make whomever the last one standing after possessions the Promised One. It just so happened to once again be Ash, just as it was in the movies. I think it would have been super cool if Cheryl or Linda became the new promised one, but the cards did not fall that way. With his new role unlocked, Ash’s player got a few new skills and a couple of small skill boosts.)
Ash now free of control, runs back a few feet and grabs his trusty boomstick from the dirt, and heads to the Cabin. Busting through the back door, Ash levels his boomstick at the girls. Unable to overcome his sense of duty to both Linda and Cheryl, he takes aim at Shelly and fires. Shelly, nimbly, dodges out of the way and charges the big chinned hero.
Linda and Cheryl try to figure out how Ash is back to his human self but come up with nothing as Shelly attacks again. Ash bashes Shelly in the face and runs out the back door. Cheryl gives chase as Linda picks up the Necronomicon.
Ash, Cheryl, and Shelly tussle in the back, with Cheryl grabbing Ash around the waist and giving Shelly a chance to do some damage. After many back and forth rolls Ash finally manages to get free and head for the woodshed.
Linda, now accompanied by a slow brained Deadite Scotty, heads out to the front yard to wait for Ash. After a few moments of waiting she begins to walk around the right side of the cabin.
Ash makes it to the woodshed as Cheryl grabs him once more. With one final bash with the butt of the boomstick, Ash slams the door on the woodshed and as gained temporary relief.
Mindless Deadite Scotty begins to bang on the door to the shed to try and get it to open. Ash, meanwhile, goes to work.
Out front, the hot demon girl club, discuss their next steps. Realizing that Ash is just one man and he is not worth the effort of all of them, so Cheryl and Shelly decide to run to the nearest town to begin infecting as many as possible so that the world can…
“Join Us…”
Linda walks into the cellar to try and study the book. Once there, she looks for where Scotty found the book, hoping for some notes, but finds nothing. She takes some time and opens the book.
Ash has been busy in the woodshed making stuff. He only manages to successfully create the harness that holds his boomstick and uses the chainsaw to turn it into a sawed-off variant. A failed perception check made this encounter a little less nightmarish.
With Scotty still banging away on the door, Ash decides now is as good a time as any. He lines up his shot as best he can and chainsaws right through the door and right through Scotty’s skull. A fountain of black blood and bile slam Ash in the face as he hacks apart his former friend.
Ash opens the door and continues to dismember the body to be sure. He even kicks Scotty’s head as far as he can into the woods to separate the parts somewhat.
Ash scans the surroundings and doesn’t see the girls anywhere. Using the gas can he found in the woodshed, Ash begins to light the cabin on fire.
Linda continues to read the book in the cellar when she begins to smell smoke. Realizing what has happened she takes off after her lover.
Ash, having successfully set the cabin ablaze, gets into his trusty Delta 88 with his boomstick and chainsaw and after breathing a deep breath of relief begins to drive away. He looks in the review mirror at his face, which seems to have aged about six years, before it into a better position and seeing Linda chasing him like a T-1000. Ash slams the car into reverse and attempts to run her over, but the dancer body of Linda leaps out of the way and onto the roof of the Delta.
Ash points his boomstick to the roof and discharges both barrels. Linda unable to dodge at such close range is blasted off the roof and lands on the forest floor with a wet thud. Ash slams the car into reverse and backs over Linda’s form. He puts the car back to drive and bumps over her once more as he drives to what he assumes is freedom. As Ash’s taillights fade into the darkness, we see Linda’s hand twitch.
Cheryl and Shelly have made it to the bridge and see that it has been completely upended and destroyed. The two deadite women decide that they will just wade across the river below. Once they reach the other side they hear voices coming from the ridge above.
Annie and Ed have arrived at the bridge where they have just meet Bobby Joe and Jake, two locals who offer to show them a way around the bridge, for a price. Annie tricks Jake into carrying her luggage, like in the movie, and the group begins to leave the area.
Cheryl sees this as an opportunity though and beguiles herself before approaching the humans. Cheryl screams for help as she walks up from the side of the road. When the new group turns around and see the bloody girl, Bobby Joe and Annie run over to help. Cheryl says that her friend is hurt down by the river and she needs a ride to the hospital.
Annie rolls a crit fail to put this stranger over her own family and decides that she isn’t going to waste time on these two women. Bobby Joe on the other hand goes to try and help Shelly, who still can not beguile (her rolls for that skill where awful) is full-on demonized. Bobby Joe freaks and pulls out her hidden gun (in this reroll to give Bobby Joe some extra character I made her a secret DEA agent, who is undercover and trying to find Jake’s Marijuana crops) and points it at Shelly. “Don’t move!”
Cheryl, ignoring the commotion, asks Jake to take her into town he drops the trunk and runs to place the young woman in his truck. Annie freaks out about the trunk and runs over to pick up her papers. Ed is already trying to pick them up in his bumbling way, but Annie is oblivious to him.
Shelly continues to move forward, and Bobby Joe barks her order again. “Don’t move! Stop Moving!” Bobby Joe takes aim. Hearing all the commotion, Annie rolls again to see if she will help and crit succeeds. Annie remembers a time in White Chapel, where she was hurt and afraid, and this snaps her to her sense, and she grabs a small letter opener and runs off to help Bobby Joe.
Shelly continues to inch forward, and Bobby Joe goes to take her shot, but Annie bumps into her back causing the round to go wide. Shelly attempts to reason with the two ladies, but with a crit fail decides to just run away.
Bobby Joe confused at the look of Shelly asks Annie if she knows anything. Annie tells her about the Necronomicon pages that she has and that according to her father, the book can raise demonic forces that possess humans. Learning this, the three new heroes get in the small car and drive off toward a back path to the cabin that Bobby Joe knows of.
Ash arrives at the destroyed bridge and screams in anguish. Not seeing another option, he turns the car around and heads back towards the cabin.
Linda has gotten up from her boomstick kiss and has gone back to the cellar. While down there she remembers the bit on the tape about Knowby burying his wife down here after she was turned. Linda finds a shovel and begins to dig up Henrietta.
Once freed, Henrietta asserts her dominance over Linda, which chafes the Head Bitch in Charge the wrong way. Henrietta informs Linda that Ash is no mere mortal, he is the Promised One and he is their greatest threat.
Ash returns to the cabin and seeing Linda gone, scans the surroundings for her. The cabin itself is almost completely burned to the ground at this point. The only things left, being the stone chimney and the cellar door, which is suspiciously standing open.
Ash’s curiosity gets the better of in and he arms himself with the boomstick and chainsaw before walking down the stairs into the darkened abyss.
As he descends the stairs, he is greeted by an eerie silence. The pipes have stopped dripping and the cracks from the fire are sparing. Ash, boomstick leveled, moves through the dirt cellar with determination. He spies a freshly dug hole off to the side and he begins to hear wailing and crying. “Don’t hurt me.”
Ash continues towards the voice as it cries. He sees a foot sticking out from behind a wall and in full badass mode says, “You ain’t fooling me you bitch. The jig is up.” Ash jumps around the wall and shoves his boomstick at the scared old women cowering.
Ash, taken aback by this, spins suddenly as he hears a loud clicking sound start-up in the next room. He tells the women “Wait here.” as he moves towards the clicking room. When he arrives, he sees an old movie projector has sprung to life and his shining onto an old pinned up sheet. The room begins to turn red as the projector lens starts to leak blood. The hanging light also fills with the red stuff and as Ash is distracted by this, Linda jumps out and attacks him. She shoves him back hard against the wall and Ash bangs his head with such ferocity that he falls into unconsciousness.
Cheryl rides in the truck with sleazy Jake, who actually is too much in love with Bobby Joe to try anything with the young deadite. Cheryl makes idle conversation but avoids answering any major questions until the pair pull up to a stoplight just shy of a town. Cheryl turns to Jake and transforms into her monster form before tearing out Jake’s throat. The camera pans back as the truck rocks violently and the windows are splattered with blood. So, much blood fills the inside of the cab that the windows shatter as buckets flow out onto the street. Cheryl steps out of the truck and shakes off her shoes. She grabs the hunting rifle from the back window of Jake’s truck and begins to walk to the town in the distance.
A few hours later, as the sun is slowly cresting over the far mountains, Annie, Ed, and Bobby Joe arrive. The cabin and forest floor where they are is still shrouded in darkness as they pull up to the burnt-out husk of what was once the Knowby cabin. The trio step out of the car and begin to walk toward the carnage when they see the dismembered body of Scotty by the woodshed.
Ed crit fails his fright check and jumps back into the car and drives off, leaving the two women alone. The woods howl with a low rumble as the evil force makes its way through the trees. Hearing the howl, both Annie and Bobby Joe turn just time to see the force fly straight towards their screaming faces.
fin
And that was our take on The Evil Dead!
It was so much fun to do this film. We are 100% running a sequel to it. Our Evil Dead 2 will be very interesting though. My players have been talking about what they may do. Cheryl wants to go full rogue and start her own deadite empire and Linda wants to reassert herself as the Head Deadite in charge. She has been debating about leafing more through the Necronomicon to find a way to summon a "higher up" demon for some promotional opportunities. I might get to introduce some Ash vs Evil Dead elements into this. Eligos or Ruby could totally be on the table. Or any of the Dark ones really. I'm so excited to see where this story goes.
Welp, this concludes the three recaps. I hope y’all enjoy these as much as we did.
Happy Halloween month everyone! Bear Hug! (arms & legs)

2020.08.28 09:31 YoungRandyVelarde What is the JBP? (A Philosophical Breakdown)

Charlamange’s response to what Joe said hit me in a funny way just because I’m defensive of Joe but Lenard had a point about the contract negotiations. That makes me think about how this show is classified and why I think Joe and Ian are having such an issue controlling the narrative about this Spotify deal.
What is the JBP?
If it’s a podcast, podcasts NORMALLY aren’t concerned with things like vacation leave and sick time just because it’s not a “job”. Normally if they want to go on vacation they either put a few episodes in the tuck or they’re just...not there! The specifics of the Spotify contract seem to be set up where they are paid a set amount of money for a set amount of episodes of a set period of time. That’s why when they dropped 3 episodes in a week the third episode counted toward the deal. That’s why Joe’s focus on bonuses, paid time off and Rolexes made me really curious because these are all things you get as an employee...not as a partner.
What is the JBP?
When the Wondery and Ringer deals were announced and Joe started looking around for his bag, the first thing i said was “that’s a network, that’s a network, you’re a podcast.” Joe has an empire but it’s a pretty disorganized and underdeveloped brand as a whole. I can go to The Ringer and if i learned who they are today, I can go to their site and see a full list of their offerings. if i go to the JBP site i see merch and i see a blog with a link to Spotify and a link to the YouTube. There’s no mention of State of the Culture, Pull Up or anything that adds value to the brand. More than anything there hasn’t been anything new from the brand by Rory, Mal or Parks. Those three have different strengths and it doesn’t have to be a podcast or a pull up for them but they could have added value and help bolster this brand.
As a Network, the JBP would take too much development to reorganize to be worth what the Ringer and Wondery would be worth not to mention they couldn’t match the output despite having a podcast that is a top podcast. Having the number 1 podcast doesn’t mean anything when you can own 20 podcasts that chart in the top 500. This is like the streams argument with why Chris Brown has 60 track albums, because he wants the streams! The Ringers podcasts may not chart but I guarantee you they have a larger volume of streams and that’s where the money is.
So what is the JBP?
Right now it’s a podcast and I think while Joe at the time caught the best deal in the market, he looks dead like Scottie Pippen at the end of his deal trying to renegotiate with the Bulls Owner because he’s still on a wack ass deal. Joe leaves these deals acrimoniously because I think he feels his deals should be a lot more fluid and when the economy changes in his favor he should see some immediate benefits or else he’s gonna try and find a way out. The problem is the partner doesn’t see them as a partner at all really, they were just a set number of streams.
I hope with as many creative minds and marketing pros that are on this team they can assemble a network after this Spotify deal that sets up Joe right. Give Joe a real brand, a real image and then Joe needs to be consistent about his output on non pod-stuff. I don’t want to shit on Ian and Joe and i think they’re great but they need some real help as far as organizing a cohesive image and brand if they are going on their own. If they’re going immediately under another umbrella I hope it’s a short term deal.

2020.06.13 14:10 Kayfim20 “Day Of The Dove” - First Time Viewing Reaction

Note: I took some time off Star Trek because of personal life/work stuff but also because for my birthday I got a pack of four sci-fi themed adventure games - Primordia, Gemini Rue, Technobabylon, and Shardlight. Though obviously not Trek related, they’re very good and the pack is highly recommended to all sci-fi gamers.
Note 2: My Trekkie dad wants you to know of his disappointment that TOS never did an episode about an alien shapeshifter that impersonates the ship’s doctor called The Real McCoy.
Noob Trek 62 - Day Of The Dove
This title is a bit corny, but bonus points for reminding me of my favourite album cover of all time:
https://www.discogs.com/Mike-Adkins-Thank-You-For-The-Dove/release/1331151
It features the track “What’s Wrong With My Children?”
Anyway, getting on to the episode. Really interesting set up - a human base has been destroyed but there’s no physical trace of destruction, a mysterious being of light is lurking nearby, and there’s klingons in the area but far from being the perpetrators they seem like they’re having their own problems with their ship in ruins. Even though I recognise the familiar trope of an episode in which adversaries have to get along with each other against a common foe (day of the dove = day of peace between Federation and Klingons?) I’m still keen to see how it plays out in Star Trek. I know that in later shows the Klingons and the humans get along better so it would be cool to see that lore. Plus the Klingon makeup has changed again! It’s unfortunate that they’ve opted for blackface but at least they’re trying as opposed to The Trouble With Tribbles where the klingons just looked like some guys. But the way their leader just wordlessly marches up and bitch slaps Kirk with no context has me laughing out loud.
Interesting note about how Klingons killed Chekov’s brother, it’s about time these characters got fleshed out a bit. I also like Ansara as Kang - his cold reponse to Chekov’s “You killed my brother!” is “And you volunteer to join him. That is loyalty.” Ansara has a strong, stern voice that suits this role well. Chekov’s screams as he is tortured are actually genuinely unsettling, well played by Koenig.
Wait a second, are Kodos and Kang from The Simpsons named after Klingons from Star Trek? That’s cool, I never knew that.
I like how Scotty is able to not only seperate the landing party from the Klingons and delay their beaming aboard, but to rotate them to face the wrong way to disorient them when the security team seizes them. It also sends the episode in a different direction from what I was expecting - with Kang already subdued, what is the real threat that Kirk is going to face this episode?
I believe this is the first time we’ve seen Klingon women, interesting. The little glowing ball that’s causing all this trouble is cool too. We’ve seen shimmering light monsters before rendered with varying degrees of effectiveness, but they really seem to have got it right here. The movement is well controlled and it’s visually clear what it’s up to, plus it turns invisible very cleanly. However at some point it stops turning invisible which is rather counter to it’s plan of going unnoticed, and this is never explained, something of a plot hole. And it’s another super powerful being story but I don’t mind because having the Klingons on board and in the mix while it wreaks havoc is different and exciting. And it keeps getting more intriguing - I’m just thinking how out of character Chekov’s bloodlust is and then Sulu reveals that Chekov’s brother never existed. So what’s going on here?
The reveal shot of Scotty amidst all the swords in the armoury is hilarious. McCoy’s transformation is handled well too. I thought something was off when he engaged in bigotry in the elevator early on, and it turns out they were planting seeds for the emotional manipulation of the light ball. I also like how the Klingons are being played as assholes (listen to enjoyment in Kang’s voice when he says ”You will die of suffocation in the cold icy loneliness of space) when they could have gone for the “we‘re all the same, kumbayah“ approach. The fact is that although the Klingons aren’t responsible for *this* villainy, they are quite capable of villainy and that non-equivalence of morality and values between the two sides gives the episode more tension. It’s a lot harder to put aside differences against a common foe when your enemy really is your enemy rather than someone you merely misunderstood, as is usually the trope for this type of story.
When even level-headed Spock is giving into the madness, you know it’s serious. Kirk’s line “Even race hatred?” is also very poignant. It’s not intention to be political here, but I can’t help but be aware that I write this post on a reddit that right now has a “Star Trek reddit stands against racism” post stickied to the top, and it hurts to think that 52 years on from the creation of this episode, the race hatred Kirk reviles still isn’t a thing of the past. Was this episode another Vietnam war allegory?
Amid a very tense episode, there’s still some laughs. “Nothing’s responding” Sulu cries as the power immediately comes back on. Yet the laughter dies when lovable Chekhov suddenly gets rapey with Mara. “You don’t die... yet.” And the closeups on their faces. Brrrrrr. Koenig is handling this well, he’s grown as an actor. On the one hand I can applaud how adult the show is being; the characters are being driven to extreme attitudes of warlike behaviour, and abuse of enemy women is a sad reality of warfare. On the other it feels a bit too dark for this context. It’s a bit rich for Kirk to save her, judging by his conduct in past episodes I half expected Kirk to take Chekhov’s place.
It’s a shame that Mara is spending all this screen time standing silently around glaring. They’re wasting an opportunity to flesh out the Klingon race by developing our first on-screen Klingon female into a meaningful character. I also don’t like these scenes where Kirk and Spock explain the plot, which we’ve had a few of lately.
Ooh, inter-ship travel, that’s neat, I had wondered why we’d never seen them try that before. Another quite adult moment as Kang suspects Kirk of banging Mara. Was this sort of content dicey when broadcast? Btw, we have a Vulcan/human child in Spock, do we ever see a human/Klingon person? Man, the foley guy went bananas on this sword fight. Two swords connect, and we get the sound of someone putting an anvil in a cement mixer.
Some interesting parallels with Balance Of Terror. Almost an inversion of that episode, where Kirk and his admirable foe, not so different, guided by a different set of principles are separated across the gulf of space. Here they’re right in each other’s faces, and there’s some similar philosophical territory being explored.
As Kirk rattles off some jingoes about peace and love, Kang chimes in with ”We need no urging to hate humans”, hahaha. I love how they’re having the KlingonS stay true to character. This isn’t some naive brotherhood moment for the Klingons, they’re doing it for their own motives. As Kang says, “Only a fool fights in a burning house.”
Shockingly abrupt ending though, I was expecting some aftermath. I wonder what happened to Kang and Mara. Be pretty funny if, as the Enterprise sails away into the credits into a new dance of peace and understanding between races, an airlock pops open and we see all the Klingons being ejected.
Great episode. Made the Klingons great again after they seemed a bit silly in the likes of Friday’s Child and The Trouble With Tribbles. I was never bored, it kept me guessing, and lots of action and drama mixed in with moments both mature and amusing. The ultimate compliment is I did not regret taking a break from my new games to spend my evening watching this episode. Good to be back.

2020.06.08 18:00 cilantro_samosa [OC] What would rosters look like if you took the top 700 players in WS/48 and put them on teams they grew up near?

If you're not a fan of reading a lot of text, here's the imgur link to rosters, although you should know I added 12 new teams! There is a TL;DR at the bottom!

Inspiration

Ever since LeBron went back to Cleveland, it's always fascinated me on what rosters would look like if everyone went home. I did this recently for the current rosters (all 514 players that played a game in 2019-2020 plus Jusuf Nurkic, who would have returned had the season continued normally)!

Player Pool and Team Pool

I used the top 699 players who have at least 15000 minutes played in their career (this is the Play Index query).
Why 15000 minutes played? Because that's the standard set by Basketball-Reference to get on their career leaderboard. I do realize it somewhat shortchanges some players who spent most of their career in the ABA and players who burned bright but had injury troubles, but I had to stop somewhere! I added three players (Arvydas Sabonis, Bill Walton and George Mikan) for a total of 702. These players haven't played enough minutes, but are featured in All-Time ESPN NBARank and Bill Simmons Hall of Fame Pyramid.

I started off with the current 30 teams. To split up the Lakers and Clippers, I gave the Clippers their proposed Inglewood site.
As I looked at the map of player hometowns, I realized that there were some areas that had a lot of players, but few close NBA teams. Based off city population and arena size, I added 12 new teams (this would work out great with an 82 game schedule, as teams would play everyone else once at home and once away).

New Teams:
Team Arena (Capacity) Notables
Anaheim Amigos Honda Center (18336) Kawhi Leonard, Reggie Miller, Bill Walton
Birmingham Barons Legacy Arena (17654) Charles Barkley, Eric Bledsoe, Artis Gilmore
Long Island Knights Nassau Coliseum (14500) Julius Erving, Andre Drummond, Bob Cousy
Louisville Colonels KFC Yum Center (22090) Larry Bird, Rajon Rondo, Dave Cowens
Newark Americans Prudential Center (18711) Kyrie Irving, Rick Barry, Shaquille O'Neal
North Little Rock RimRockers Simmons Bank Arena (18000) Scottie Pippen, Sidney Moncrief, Joe Johnson
Pittsburgh Ironmen PPG Paints Arena (19100) Jerry West, Pete Maravich, John Havlicek
Raleigh Cougars PNC Arena (19722) Michael Jordan, John Wall, Alonzo Mourning
Seattle SuperSonics KeyArena (18600) John Stockton, Steve Nash, Detlef Schrempf
Shreveport Storm CenturyLink Center (13000) Karl Malone, Joe Dumars, Willis Reed
South Side Sky Wintrust Arena (10387) Dwyane Wade, Derrick Rose, Anthony Davis
Spirits of St. Louis Enterprise Center (22000) Bradley Beal, Andre Iguodala, Harry Gallatin

The Process

I created rotations to the best of my ability, but I am not proclaiming these as the be-all, end-all
Next phase was to add international players
And with that, here are the all-time hometown rosters including internationals! (If you're more of a visual person, here's the imgur link where I also included key stats and awards)

2020.06.08 17:59 cilantro_samosa [OC] What would rosters look like if you took the top 700 players in WS/48 and put them on teams they grew up near?

2020.01.03 16:37 sconce2600 The List: 2020

Edit 4/9/20: The lineup potentially leaked on the official website, bold names denote the names leaked (this may change upon an official release).
This is a list of acts that are potentially playing OSLs 2020. I intend to update this list via edit from now until the lineup drop. If you want to add someone to this list just comment below and I will modify the list and credit your handle next to the edit. If you want to find someone in particular quickly I suggest you use ctrl F.
POTENTIAL HEADLINERS
POTENTIAL UNDERCARD:
Playing five tracked festivals
Playing four tracked festivals
Playing three tracked festivals
Playing two tracked festivals
Playing one tracked festival
Added by users, not currently playing any heavy crossover festivals so far
The following have appeared at OSLs once before but have not released new material since their first stint and are therefore less likely to appear in 2019 (To date only Beck and Vance Joy have returned WITHOUT new material, making the following acts much less likely)
The following is a list of bands that have played OSLs more than once and the gaps between return performances, considering only five acts have ever played OSLs three times, all acts in this section should be considered less likely than acts that have played OSLs once or never. Note that no act has ever returned quicker than a three year gap, Givers, Fantastic Negrito, and Big Boi were all makeup performances for prior year cancellations.
Headliners
Threepeaters
Three year gap
Four year gap
Five year gap
Six year gap
Seven year gap
Eight year gap
Ten year gap
The following are past lineup drop dates, all lineup drops from 2012 to 2019 have occurred on a Tuesday:

2019.11.08 12:59 kuraido_ Remaining Sync Pairs (found via datamining)

The following contains SPOILERS. If you do not wish to know the future sync pairs, turn back now!
Hey everyone, so I've been datamining this game since beta/pre-release and I noticed something that piqued my interest. By looking at the sync move background art, we can determine which trainers will be released in the near future. Note this was datamined long before the official release, and every "new" character we have gotten since them can also found within these image files. In other words: Blue, Hilbert, Lyra, Hilda, Elesa, and Caitlin can all be found within these files as well.
Without further ado, the next wave of sync pairs include:
I can post an album of the sync move background art if you all would like as well. Also, I'd also like to note that there is no definite order of release either, so I have no idea when each of these trainers will be released. As far as their partner Pokemon are concerned, that is a bit trickier to figure out although not impossible.
Source: Datamined information can be found here.

2019.08.30 22:47 KikiFlowers The Life and Times of the Hartford Whalers.

The story of the Hartford Whalers is a particularly interesting one to me. From their very beginnings in the WHA, to joining the NHL, to being the perennial underachiever, to finally being moved to North Carolina. Obviously there is a lot more to this story than "they were bad and they moved", much, much more. The Hartford Whalers started life as the New England Whalers, a franchise in the World Hockey Association, a rival league to the NHL, that challenged the NHL's hold on Hockey and their reserve clause(basically meaning: You play with us, until we trade you or you retire). Over 67 players jumped to the WHA, including names such as Gordie Howe or Bobby Hull, with the WHA also going onto sign more European players and having young stars such as Wayne Gretzky. The New England Whalers started playing in 1972, led by ex-NHLers, Tom Webster(Red Wings), Ted Green(Bruins)(Inaugural Captain too) and many others, the Whalers first season was an incredible one for them, finishing First in their division and winning the Avco Cup. At the same time though, they had to play around the schedules of every other team playing in the Boston Garden, which led to scheduling issues for the Whalers, they essentially got the shortest end of the stick, because they were seen as a joke.
Enter Hartford, Connecticut, one of the richer cities in North America, they had just finished building the Hartford Civic Center, a multipurpose arena in the heart of downtown Hartford. The City had been hoping to attract an ABA Franchise to the city, but when that failed they had settled on the Whalers, giving them a home for their rest of the franchises existence(...ish). On January 11, 1975 the Whalers played their first game at the Civic Center, in front of a sold out crowd, where they defeated the San Diego Mariners 4-3 in Overtime. The next few seasons were pretty good for the Whalers, although they never quite achieved the success they had in the first season, they made It back to the Avco Finals in the '78 season, losing to the original Winnipeg Jets, although this came at the cost of losing their new arena, due to a roof collapse they were forced to play 26 miles up the road in Springfield, MA at the Big E Coliseum and the Springfield Civic Center(home to the AHL Thunderbirds and NCAA Yellow Jackets), for the remainder of their two WHA Seasons.
After 8 years of operation, the WHA merged with the NHL, with most of the clubs outright folding, save for the Whalers, Oilers, Jets(final Avco Cup winners) and Nordiques. Unlike the other clubs, the Whalers were allowed to keep the NHLers they had on their roster, rather than sending them back to their original team, as the other “new” teams had to do. This allowed the Whalers a slight advantage over many of the other NHL Teams, especially being able to keep players like Bobby Hull, Gordie Howe and Andre Lacroix(WHA All-Time Leading scorer). This advantage helped them become the first expansion team in NHL History to make the playoffs in their first year, a feat which would not be broken, until the Vegas Golden Knights joined. This merger was far from smooth however, as the Bruins who held a firm grasp on the New England market came close to(or did?) suing the league over admission of the Whalers, finally settling allowing the New England Whalers to join on the condition they change their name to the Hartford Whalers.
Their first NHL season was one of their best ever, finishing with 73 points, the best of the former WHA Teams. In the first Round of the Norris Division playoffs however, the Whalers fell 0 Games to 3 Games, to the Montreal Canadiens, the reigning champions went on to lose to the Minnesota North Stars. That however proved to be their only playoff run for about 5 seasons, as they lost their stars in Howe, Lacroix and Lacroix, all announced their retirements, although this was not Howe’s final time playing professional hockey as he later signed a contract to play 1 game, 1 shift, with the IHL’s Detroit Vipers(the IHL was the NHL’s previous farm league before the ECHL). Losing their stars, combined with the aging WHA roster and a management making bad trades to try and stay afloat, led to a 5 season long drought. Despite the drought, attendance rose at the Civic Center and would continue rising until the 88-89 season, where attendance finally began falling off.
The 1981 Draft was a great time to be a Whalers fan, they had just missed the playoffs, but had gotten Fourth Overall, leading them to draft Ron Francis. Francis made almost an immediate impact, with multiple point per game seasons, though it wasn’t enough to lead to the Whalers to a playoff berth, that wouldn’t happen until the 85-86 season. 85-86 was a magical time to be a Whalers fan, things began looking up, which seemed fair. In Game 1 of the season, down 3-0 to the Buffalo Sabres, Kevin Dineen led the Whalers in an incredible comeback, scoring 2 goals, which ultimately led to the Whalers winning 5-4. The following night was their home opener at home against the Rangers, with goals by Francis and Ferrao, the Whalers decimated their opponent with a score of 8-2, in front of an incredible crowd of over 15,142 fans. October was a pretty good month for them, beating the Canadiens 11-6 and going 6-4-0 for the month of October, leading to them sitting in third place in the Adams division. It cannot be stated enough how much these Whalers seemed like they were a playoff team, goalie Mike Liut was having a spectacular first few months, after being acquired late last season from the Blues for Greg Millen and Mark Johnson.
November was a different story! Their first three games they lost by over 20 goals total, scoring only 7 total in this time. After trading for Defenseman Dave Babych, they looked legit for at least one game, against the Jets where they won 8-1, with Francis getting a hat trick. The fun didn’t stop there though! They went onto win their next two games with a combined score of 25-6(and 1 shutout of the Kings). After falling to the Oilers though, things went back to normal, they fell out of their playoff spot, dropping it to the Canadiens, who also were barely holding on. November ended with a record of 5-7-0.
The rest of the season had its ups and downs, Francis was incredible, Dineen was an incredible player, while goaltending could be better, it could be much worse. They barely got into the playoffs, but it didn’t matter to the fans, they were going to the Adams Final this year! ...Where the Canadiens proceeded to destroy them in 7 hard fought games. All in all it was considered their best season ever at this point and to be fair, it was the best the Whalers would ever get, even though they finished 1st in the Adams the following year, they lost in the first round to the Nordiques(Hartford was cursed to lose to Quebec), this was the first and only season the Whalers had finished above Fourth in the Adams. To be honest, they were never “worldbeaters”, they were a smaller market team, which meant it was harder to attract great players, let alone trade for them, in many ways it’s the curse of location.
The 80’s Whalers didn’t bring us much playoff victories, but they brought us...Whaler Mania. Sung by the one and only “Whaler Maniacs”. This video features a Hall of Fame cast, inspired by the likes of "the Bears Shufflin Crew’ Crew or the LA Rams “Ram It”, this summed up the 80’s in a nutshell, music videos from sports teams.
The next few seasons were about much of the same, making the playoffs only to lose to Montreal, minus the two years where Boston beat them, it was usually just Montreal kicking them out of the first round. The 80s came and went, in what could be considered semi-successful, they got out of the first round once, they made it to the Adams Final, finished 1st in the Adams, but just couldn’t beat Montreal, Quebec, or Boston, to make a real run.
Their best playoff run ever was celebrated with a Whalermania Parade, where over 40,000 fans attended. You might be wondering why a parade? Honestly who knows, it was probably to get more eyes on the product.
The Hartford Whalers, trade forward Ron Francis Defensemen Ulf Samuelsson and Grant Jennings to the Pittsburgh Penguins, in exchange for Forwards John Cullen, Jeff Parker and Defenseman Zarley Zalapski. You may be asking “Why did they trade Francis!?” Well, so did the fans. The Hockey News reported the Whalers got the “better end of the deal”, leading many fans to question what these writers were smoking and where to buy some of that shit. To their credit though, Cullen was the Penguins leading scorer and the other two were no jokes, they were good players the Pens gave up, Mario wasn’t that great at the time, he needed someone like Francis to compliment his abilities.
The Penguins went onto win the next 2 Cups, cementing Mario's legacy as one of the top five players to play in the NHL. Francis cemented his legacy as one of the best as well, not top five, I don't think though. Francis even had a hat trick in the '92 playoffs against the Rangers.
(I can't find anything with Francis from the '91 Finals, so enjoy this clip! of him scoring on the Caps!)
Despite this, they made in the playoffs in 91-92, losing to the Canadiens, who despite looking like favorites to sweep, blew it, the Whalers responded by winning Games 3 and 4, Montreal won Game 5 due to crease violations(these weren’t enforced at the time), but Hartford tied it in Game 6, 24 seconds in Overtime thanks To Yvon Corriveau. Heartbreak happened though as usual, as they lost Game 7 in Montreal. During the offseason Coach Jimmy Roberts was fired, alongside GM Eddie Johnston, who just took his talents(???) to Pittsburgh as a Coach instead.
The Hartford Whalers announce the hiring of Brian Burke, naming him the 5th General Manager in franchise history. Burke had most recently built the Vancouver Canucks who had gone onto a Cup Final(You know how that ended..). GM Brian Burke announces the hiring of Paul Holmgreen, the 10th Coach in franchise history. Holmgreen had most recently coached the Flyers, through a crazy playoff run, they had beat Lemieux's Penguins 4 games to 3, winning Game 7 in Pittsburgh. They then missed the playoffs twice, before he got fired. Holmgreen proceeds to name Pat Verbeek the team’s new Captain, counting the carousel of Captaincy. He got to play with up and coming stars, Andrew Cassels and Geoff Sanderson though, which was nice.
Burke’s first trade as a GM came quick: The Hartford Whalers trade Forward Bobby Holik, a 1993 Second-Round Pick and a conditional draft pick in 94(I can’t find anything on the condition) to the New Jersey Devils for Goaltender Sean Burke(no relation to Brian) and Defenseman Eric Weinrich. Burke had been playing internationally for Canada’s national team and for the Devils’ IHL affiliate. To say the least, he was a rookie sensation for the Devils, he had previously helped Canada(Junior) win a Silver Medal and from there went straight to the NHL, where he seemed...good. In the ‘89 season he was even named to the All-Star Game, being one of the few rookie goaltenders to make get named to the game. He was quickly becoming the face of the franchise, becoming the first Devil to be on the cover for The Hockey Digest. However by 1990 he became unhappy with the team and sat out 91-92, playing for Team Canada instead. So this was a seemingly good trade that Burke made, a change of scenery could do him well. He was even voted Whalers team MVP from 94 to 97, so it worked out for him, even though this team never even so much as sniffed the postseason again.
Behind the scenes, things were...rough. Brian Burke didn’t last long in the role as GM, he quit after one season. Head Coach Paul Holmgreen stepped into the GM Role as well as staying head coach, until November 16th when he stepped down as coach, citing a “lack of effort from the players” and “wanting to focus on being a GM”. Pierre Mcguire(again that Pierre) became the new Coach and...he was pretty hated actually. To quote the Hartford Courant: “He fancied himself two-parts Scotty Bowman and one-part Bob Johnson. It was a super-human leap of faith on his part.” Basically he tried to act like Scotty Bowman, being cold and distant to the players, while at the same time trying to be ``friends” with them, like Bob Johnson tried to do more of. He was so hated that Whalers Captain Pat Verbeek(amazing he lasted this long as Captain!) was quoted as saying: “the best thing that could have happened to the Whalers.” Yes, the team captain is literally shitting on the ex-coach, because he was that goddamn awful. Nobody liked Pierre, he mocked other coaches and drove away players, even the fans were happy he was gone. He later went onto be the annoying guy NBC trots out to torture us, because they hate all of us.
You might be thinking, “Can’t get any worse than Pierre, right?” Well it does. March 30th, 1994(before Pierre got fired), GM Paul Holmgren was arrested for driving drunk in Simsbury, Connecticut. From there he went to the Betty Ford Center for treatment / rehab, where upon Whalers owner Richard Gordon tried to fire him, being stopped by Bettman himself and Connecticut Governor Lowell P. Weicker Jr, who convinced him to not. Aka Bettman told him “Do it and you’ll get a fine” most likely and Weicker probably say “Don’t do it please!”. He later became the coach again because the players were ready to either kill Pierre or hitchhike out of Hartford, if it meant not playing for him again. Seriously nobody liked Pierre, he got the job because he was an assistant under Scotty Bowman.
The Whalers finished that year with only 63 points, 5 points better than last, but nowhere near good enough.
Summer of 1994. The Whalers announce the team has been sold to Compuware(They specialize in equipment for IT) CEO Peter J Karmanos, the cheap bastard himself, alongside partners Thomas Thewes and Jim Rutherford(Pens GM). Rutherford quickly became the new GM of the Whalers, succeeding Holmgreen, whom went back to being a coach. Karmanos wanted a winning team, which made Rutherford to get Jimmy Carson and Steven Rice, in Free Agency. During the draft Rutherford selected Right Winger Jeff O'Neill with their First Rounder, O’Neill was a highly touted player, who had put up over 329 Points in only 3 Seasons with the Guelph Storm, so this was a smart decision. He never really lived up to his potential though, especially in the early years where he bounced between the Pros and Minors. Among other trades Rutherford made, he traded Chris Pronger(they weren’t happy with him not developing fast enough) for Brendan Shanahan, who was incredibly unhappy about this trade. Did it matter? Hell no! He was named Captain before even skating a single practice, the whole time he wanted out of Hartford, he felt it was too small of a market and they had an “uncertain future”.
To Karmanos’ credit, he wasn’t new to owning Hockey, he had previously owned the OHL’s Windsor Spitfire, back in 1984 along with Thomas Tewes(longtime business partner) and Jim Rutherford. The Spitfires never won a Memorial Cup with Karmanos as owner, but they came close. Karmanos eventually sold them to someone who pledged to keep the Spitfire in Windsor, so long as the OHL granted him an expansion team in Plymouth, Michigan. It was that or he’d move the Spitfire to Plymouth, so he got the Plymouth Whalers.Karmanos’ group tried unsuccessfully to get an expansion team in St Petersburg, Florida. Eventually getting his hands on the Whalers.
That’s right, behind the scenes, the Devil himself, Karmanos was trying to move the Whalers out of Hartford, unless he got a shiny new arena built by the taxpayers. At this point, Hartford was starting on an economic downswing and the Government didn’t care that much about the Whalers, to pay for a new arena. Can you blame them though? Karmanos didn’t want a new arena, he never wanted Hartford to begin with, he was eyeing another market. It was easy because the Whalers were bad, had they had good management, things might have gone differently.
The team was bad and it was even worse behind the scenes, but they had recently re-acquired Kevin Dineen who was a fan favorite and helped boost morale at the least, along with mentoring the young players. It...didn’t really help though, attendance was down and they had missed the playoffs yet again. Due to his comments, Shanahan eventually got stripped of the “C”(why give it to a guy who didn’t want to be there I don’t know), due to fans and the media attacking him for his comments. Dineen was given the Captaincy instead, but it was another season lost. Shanahan finally got traded to a big market though, Detroit. The Detroit Red Wings acquire Forward Brendan Shanahan from the Hartford Whalers in exchange for Keith Primeau, Paul Coffey and a first-rounder. It actually helped the Whalers at first, as they started the 96-97 season with a winning record(that wouldn’t last).1996 was good for them, 1997 turned awful as losing kept happening, the playoffs slipped further and further away, until it was another season of no playoffs.
To be fair here, it wasn’t all because of Karmanos that the team moved. Yes he ultimately is the one who pulled the trigger and moved him, but this tale goes back to previous ownership and people no longer in charge. A lot of this can be blamed on Richard Gordon, the former owner who bought Donald Conrad’s(the other owner) stake in the team, in the later 80s, but this story goes well into the 90’s. Donald Conrad didn’t have the money needed to equal Gordon’s investment and had to get the help of Benjamin Sisti and Colonial Realty. In the end, Conrad had to sell his share to Colonial Realty and Gordon got the control he ever so desired. It doesn’t end there, Colonial Realty then declared bankruptcy because it turns out, they were a massive ponzi scheme. This gave a ton of uncertainty to the Whalers, since now it was they didn’t meet the financial terms of Conrad’s exit, which could also lead to Conrad being back in the ownership picture. Gordon pressed the NHL to investigate Colonial Realty, but this was the 90s NHL, they let a broke guy briefly own a team, they didn’t do their due diligence. For the first time, the 90s brought the word “relocation” to the Whalers, with Blockbuster owner Wayne Huizenga trying to buy the Whalers to move them to Florida, he later got awarded an expansion team in Miami. (this is a complicated mess I'm still trying to understand)
To Gordon’s credit, he refused all relocation offers. But this was a long standing issue, people blame Karmanos, but it’s far more than just “Karmanos moved the team because he hated Hartford”, he did. Gordon’s micromanaging seems to be the reason for some of the baffling 90s trades, like trading Francis, or then trading Liut for Corriveau, who was nowhere near as good. Liut led the league in shutouts the year he was traded to Washington, while Corriveau was...bad, he bounced between the pros and minors constantly. Gordon was just as bad an owner if not worse in many ways, than Karmanos. It didn’t help that in 92, there was a player strike(it lasted 10 days) while Colonial Realty was going bankrupt. All in all it was a mess, I could write up a novel detailing all of this, but that would be boring. Gordon sold the team to Karmanos knowing Karmanos wanted to relocate a team, so please blame him more.
Fun fact: Dallas, Minneapolis(Well ok, Minneapolis never did, but Minnesota got another), Las Vegas, Anaheim and Miami all tried to get the Whalers to move to their city. All of these cities later got an expansion team, or in the case of Dallas, a relocation.
It also didn’t help that former Mayor Carrie Saxon Perry(or Hat Lady) was anti-Whalers. Famously saying “Hockey is for White People”(She’s not totally wrong though, unfortunately) and this was in a time when concession sales were becoming a much bigger deal. She didn’t want to play ball with the Whalers, she didn’t want to re-negotiate on the lease, I think she may have just wanted them gone to be honest. She wasn’t well liked by many, Aetna(they previously owned the Whalers) threatened to leave Hartford if she won a fourth term as Mayor.
I won’t go into further details on who to blame, or it’ll be forever.
With talks of the Whalers leaving, fans were livid. A “Save the Whale” Campaign launched, buying up just over 8,563 tickets, in under 45 days, despite the Whalers doing everything possible to get people to not buy tickets, fans bought up tickets to save the Whalers. It wasn’t enough though, even with the people wanting to save the team, even with everything else, Karmanos announced they were leaving. Karmanos had discussed moving to Norfolk VA, but the only arena they had, The Scope, was too small to house an NHL Franchise and the city wouldn’t build them an arena. (Norfolk is a great minor league market I think, but I’m heavily biased). Rowland’s offers weren’t good enough for Karmanos, since he was trying to move the Patriots to Hartford(spoiler: that didn’t work), he wasn’t really trying to please the Whalers, but would have bent over backwards for the Patriots. It’s a lot of bullshit.
The relocation proposals: The Move. On April 17th, 1997, the Whalers played their final home game in Hartford, defeating the Tampa Bay Lightning 2-1, with Captain Kevin Dineen scoring the final goal. On May 6, Karmanos announced the team would be relocated to Raleigh, North Carolina to become the Carolina Hurricanes. Despite years of trying and the Government doing what it could, they left and that was the last time a major league team had come to Hartford. In many ways this was the final nail in the coffin for Hartford, they were beginning to struggle and the 2000’s made the cities downswing much worse.
On October 1st, 1997, the new Carolina Hurricanes played their first game in North Carolina, losing in front of a sellout crowd to the Tampa Bay Lightning 2-4. Unfortunately, things didn’t improve, crowds were regularly drawing below 10K, the new arena wasn’t ready yet forcing them to move to Greensboro, as it was the only NHL ready arena in the state. Triangle area fans didn’t want to drive down I-40 to Greensboro, as it was an 80-Mile drive, while fans from the Piedmont Triad refused to support a lame-duck team and one that displaced the popular minor league Greensboro Monarchs. This was for all intents and purposes a stupid move, the arena was still 2 years out and fans in the area refused to support it, Karmanos had effectively killed a team that was at least getting 10k+ people to watch the games, in favor of an area that wanted nothing to do with them. It didn’t help the Greensboro Coliseum held over 20k+ seats for hockey, making it the biggest at the time in the league, but made it worse when nobody came to their games. It was so bad that sections had to be curtained off so that it wouldn’t look so awful on TV. It didn’t help only 29 TV Games were shown and radio broadcasts were often preempted by basketball, leading many to wonder “Why move them if nothing was ready?” Even Karmanos later admitted Greensboro was a mistake. The Whalers weren’t doing well in Hartford, yes, but moving them without a plan was just the best way to fuck up a relocation quickly.
The story of the Whalers isn’t a very happy one, in fact it’s pretty depressing when you realize this franchise never really had a chance, due to ownership, due to being a small market, due to a lot of factors. In the end, the Whalers are remembered for Brass Bonanza, for their run to the Adams Final, that had them a goal away from a Conference Final.
I'll probably cover the North Stars and everything that happened with them next, I dunno yet. I omitted a few things I know, like talking about the logo or mascot, but I covered the major events. Special thanks to the mods, who I didn't have to harass this week, because the bot deleted a post. And thanks to jacoobz for linking me to the Whalers article, I read through it and enjoyed it.

2019.08.27 16:16 redandbluenights Scott Patterson answers fans burning questions during his visit to his Jersey hometown of Haddonfield for "Scott Patterson Day" (Saturday)

The night before last, I had the awesome opportunity to meet Scott Patterson nearby in his hometown of Haddonfield,NJ. He was in Philly for Keystone Comicon and he visited his hometown- was honored by the Mayor and spoke, answered questions and met many of his fans.
I wanted to share some of the things that Scott talked about during his visit, because I thought you might find his answers interesting. Scott spent a lot of the time he was with us answering the crowd's questions (and even after he said "just one more" several times- he went on to answer almost two dozen more questions).
He came across as a down to earth, really GENUINE guy, (very sweet and humble). After the public ceremony- he stuck around, shook hands and said hello to about 50 people who took the time to stay and meet him. It was really kind of him to give so much time to his hometown- he's clearly VERY appreciative of his fame and the love he has for Gilmore fans. Then he took a walk around the down town area with the Mayor and some fans who decided to go with.
So here are his answers to most of the public's questions);
Oh, and...Last thing (I swear); He got asked to choose between Bon Jovi and Bruce Springsteen... To which he said "Oh no... No way!" (Laughing) "That's a trap- there's no way I'm answering that one... I am not that dumb, my friend. There's no way I'm stepping on that land mine!" - He went on to say that of course, they are both FANTASTIC and raved about both musicians, thier early albums especially, and thier importance to NJ.
He took the time after the ceremony to say Hi and & thanks to the many people who came to see him- and to hug a ton of the fans and old friends that hung out (myself included). It was A GREAT night and I genuinely am glad I could share a little bit of his visit to NJ with all of you all!!
So that's it! Now you can all feel like you were there! So much love!!!!
<3 RedandBlueNights You can see a couple of the photos from his visit (including me meeting him- here; http://imgur.com/gallery/6fd6Y7T)

The Purge Continues. Adult responsibilities, a small house, and a toddler means that I do not have a lot of time to listen to records and I am transitioning out of the game. Sold a lot here, never had any issues and am pretty pleasant to deal with. Have a 99.3% seller rating on Discogs so not new to this. Shipping is $5 which means a brand new mailer and tracking (I use Paypal G&S).
Not currently interested in trades of any sort. I will ship any orders from the weekend out on Monday (You'll get tracking #s Sunday or Monday).

2019.07.25 16:00 cilantro_samosa [OC] All-Time Hometown/Territorial Rosters!

Good morning y'all! Hope y'all are having a wonderful day! Thought I would contribute to my second-favourite sub (shoutout sweet onion chicken teriyaki) by posting something I've been working on for a while: all-time hometown rosters!
This is gonna be a very long post, so there's a TL;DR at the bottom. If you wanna just get to the lineups, hit control-f/command-f/find-in-page and search for Atlanta Hawks, or go to this Imgur album for visualizations with pictures and stats (I'm sorry for the quality, I had to do scrolling screenshots)!

Inspiration

Ever since LeBron went back to Cleveland, it's always fascinated me on what rosters would look like if everyone went home. The two posts that gained traction on this sub both used current rosters. This one used birth states, while this one improved on the prior by using high schools.

Player Pool and Team Pool

I used the top 250 players from the Career WS/48 Leaderboard on Basketball-Reference. I feel like this rewards contributions on the court without rewarding for longevity. But I did notice that AI was very low and Isiah Thomas was not even in the top 250. To include the players that advanced stats forgot, players from All-Time ESPN NBARank and Bill Simmons Hall of Fame Pyramid were incorporated. I know that Bill is the biggest homer and the book is now 10 years old, but what other ranking is big and reliable enough?

I used the 30 current teams and Seattle, because I still feel bad for them losing their team. To split up the Lakers and Clippers, I applied an idea from the high school roster post by giving the Clippers their proposed Inglewood site. I used Chase Center as the Warriors arena.

Who didn't make the cut?

Apologies in advance if your favourite player didn't make the snubs list.
Very likely to make it next season (14000+ minutes, over 0.1238 WS/48) Notable Active Players Under 0.1238 WS/48 (4+ AllStar Selections) Under Minutes Requirement, Over 0.1238 WS/48 Notable Retired Players under 0.1238 WS/48 (4+ AllStars)
Kawhi Leonard (14404 MP, 0.219 WS/48, Fun Guy) DeMarcus Cousins (0.117 WS/48) Kenny Sears (14923 MP, 0.179 WS/48, 2x AllStar) Mitch Richmond (Hall of Fame, 5x All-NBA, 0.111 WS/48)
Draymond Green (14979 MP, 0.139 WS/48) DeMar DeRozan (0.113 WS/48) Cedric Ceballos (14712 MP, 0.132 WS/48, 1x AllStar) Rolando Blackman (4x AllStar, 0.113 WS/48)
Isaiah Thomas (14257 MP, 0.152 WS/48) Klay Thompson (0.11 WS/48, scaffolding expert) Doug Collins (13945 MP, 0.131 WS/48, 4x AllStar) Jermaine O’Neal (3x All-NBA, 0.116 WS/48)
Rajon Rondo (0.107 WS/48) Raef LaFrentz (14545 MP, 0.13 WS/48) Rudy LaRusso (5x AllStar, 0.12 WS/48)
John Wall (0.104 WS/48) Jon Barry (13880 MP, 0.129 WS/48) Alvin Robertson (1x DPOY, 6x All-Defense, 0.101 WS/48)
Joe Johnson (0.09 WS/48) Tom Boerwinkle (14387 MP, 0.127 WS/48) Richie Guerin (Hall of Fame, 3x All-NBA, 0.121 WS/48)
Maurice Lucas (5x AllStar, 0.11 WS/48)

The Process

At this point, here are the rosters for the 31-team hometown NBA without internationals
Most Productive Teams:
Least Productive Teams: Utah, San Antonio, Denver, Phoenix and Boston all only have one player

Next phase is to add international players

The last step was to consolidate and redistribute teams so that each team had at least a seven-man rotation but no more than 15 players (chose seven because I didn't want to have do any more redistribution lol)
Consolidation Winners
Houston- get the backbone of San Antonio’s dynasty in TD, TP and Manu
Lakers- go from an Amir-Arthur Becker frontline to a Kirilenko-Pau one

Conversely, some teams had too much talent, so I split them up (I wanted between 7 and 15 players for each team)
First split: Charlotte
Second split: Indiana
Third split: Chicago
Fourth split: New York and Brooklyn (This gave me the worst problems)

And with that, here are the all-time hometown rosters including internationals! (If you're more of a visual person, here's the imgur link where I also included key stats and awards)
